While attending competitions, most other schools pull up with custom trucks and buses that have their band names/logos painted across them, with uniforms that look brand new, custom racks to hold their uniforms and equipment and plenty of room for all. This is not the case for our school. Due to budget cuts in the district, money has to get cut from somewhere, and that usually means the music programs.
Our kids don't have a fancy bus, they ride a school bus, and our equipment is transported in a rent a truck that we as boosters pay for. Our uniforms aren't in the best condition, and many are needing to be replaced but it's just not in the budget.
Last year during the Valley of Flowers Parade http://www.florissantvalleyofflowers.com/ our kids were required to wear their uniforms, made of wool, in 90 degree weather. Needles to say, due to the heat we had 1 student not able to complete the route and 5 more who were close to not making it. Many residents asked why we were wearing our "formal" uniform in such heat, well, we have nothing else.
So............. in an effort to represent our school properly and keep our kids cool we set a goal to be able to purchase new uniforms for the kids. This is not an easy task as new "formal" uniforms can cost thousands of dollars. We recently decided to do a fundraiser and told the kids that any money earned from this fundraiser would be put towards the cost of a much lighter what we consider warm weather uniform that we could wear for parades and home games thus helping to conserve the more formal uniforms for our competitions until funds can be provided for new ones. As you know, teenagers and fundraising don't always go together, but THEY DID IT!
CONGRATULATIONS STARS! YOU HAVE EARNED ENOUGH MONEY TO GET THOSE WARM WEATHER UNIFORMS!!!!!!!!!!
